Spreading awareness about the Martha Brook Stationery Advent Calendar counterfeits
Nov 12This year was the seventh year of the Martha Brook Stationery Advent Calendar, and it’s been unexpected for reasons we never could have imagined. Back in September, the Martha Brook Stationery Advent Calendar sold out in record time (thank you!) and we were blown away by your response, we couldn’t wait for you to start opening them and enjoying them.

But then, things took a horrible turn. Just days after it sold out, members of our community started contacting us sharing ads across Facebook and Instagram running using videos stolen from us. These ads directed people to websites we knew were fraudulent because no one else had our Stationery Advent Calendar to sell other than us! And we hadn’t even started shipping them yet.
One ad turned into hundreds and weeks later we’d identified shockingly around 2000 fake listings worldwide selling our Stationery Advent Calendar. Thanks to our amazing community we managed to take action, get hundreds of listings removed and spread awareness high and low. We even had an article published in the Sunday Times and Martha appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour.
Heartbreakingly we then discovered that the scammers had unbelievably created Martha Brook Stationery Advent Calendar counterfeits, and we’ve had hundreds of messages from customers who have ordered this version. So, we wanted to share with you exactly what a counterfeit looks like, how to tell the difference between an authentic calendar and a fake, what to look out for, what we’ve done so far to fight this and how you can help.

Where have the stationery advent calendar counterfeits been sold?
The authentic Martha Brook Stationery Advent Calendar was only available to buy on our website before it sold out on September 28th.
Any bought from any other website except the Martha Brook website are Stationery Advent Calendar counterfeits that have been manufactured in China by copying our photos and videos.
Examples of fraudulent websites selling stationery advent calendar counterfeits

We are aware of over 2,000 listings of Martha Brook Stationery Advent Calendar counterfeits across fraudulent websites and popular marketplaces, like Amazon, eBay and Shein, as well as hundreds of Instagram and Facebook adverts directing people to these listings.
Fraudulent adverts using our content as promoted across Meta platforms

What does a counterfeit advent calendar look like?
At a distance, it is incredible what the Chinese company have been able to do just from our photos. If this was your first time purchasing what you thought was a true Martha Brook advent calendar, you might not know what you have received is a counterfeit, so we’re going to give some pointers for what a counterfeit looks like and how you can tell the difference.
How to tell if you have one of the Martha Brook stationery advent calendar counterfeits
Personalisation
An authentic Martha Brook advent calendar was ordered personalised with any name you like, and three of the contents were personalised with your initials too.
The biggest difference between a counterfeit and our authentic product is you wouldn’t have entered any personalisation details and all the Stationery Advent Calendar counterfeits we’ve seen have the name ‘Francesca’ on the lid, as that’s what we have in the product photos!
To top that off, you’ll likely have received the inside contents personalised with BBW or BlueBearWood, which is a YouTuber who did a lovely unpacking video. We didn’t show the personalised inside contents in our photos as we wanted them to be a surprise for people.
The contents and quality
The contents do not match what we have put inside a real Martha Brook advent calendar, nor does the quality of the item as a whole.
The real contents are of a high quality and design, are made in the UK and feature no plastic packaging. A lot of the counterfeits have items packed into little plastic pockets and in a lot of them the inside boxes are in the wrong numbered order.
Our advent calendar takes us over six months to design, produce, assemble and hand-finish, and the difference in quality is immediately apparent.

The price
An authentic Martha Brook Advent Calendar is sold at £109 (excluding shipping). If you paid anything less or anything more than £109 for the stationery advent calendar, this is another sign what you have received is a counterfeit. Below is our website listing and the price of an authentic advent calendar.

The thank you note
In every advent calendar order, we include a Martha Brook thank you note which we do not photograph. This has not been included with any counterfeits so the absence of a Martha Brook thank you note is indicative of a fraudulent copy.
The invoice
The Martha Brook advent calendar can only be purchased from our website (www.marthabrook.com) and only ever dispatched from our London studio (Martha Brook, Q West, 1110 Great West Road, London, TW8 0GP). You might have noticed that we sell on Not On The High Street and Etsy, however, this year we have only sold the advent calendar through our direct website. It cannot be purchased anywhere else. If you have purchased a counterfeit, you will notice the invoice will state it is dispatched from either a Chinese address, or from a dispatch hub in either the West Midlands, London or the US.
The email communication
We spend A LOT of time on our emails, making sure they are lovely to receive and sadly, if you have ordered a counterfeit, you would not receive a Martha Brook dispatch notification. We are aware you still would have received email communications from the fraudulent website, but this would not be from us. If your dispatch notifications come from any other email address that isn’t hello@marthabrook.com, this confirms what you have ordered, and what you will receive, is unfortunately a counterfeit.
If you’re not sure that what you have ordered or will receive is a counterfeit, please reach out to our team at hello@marthabrook.com who will be able to confirm if you have an authentic product or a counterfeit.
Want to see what the stationery advent calendar counterfeits look like?
We managed to get a segment on ITV This Morning where Alice Beer shows a real Martha Brook advent calendar versus a fake, and explains the scale of the scam.

Our founder Martha also appeared on ITV tonight ‘Christmas costs and cons’ to explain the scam and showed a real and fake calendar. You can catch her from 2:30 minutes in.
You can also see our Martha unboxing one here on Instagram.
What you can do to help
As we continue to fight this, any help you can give is greatly appreciated by reporting any adverts or listings you see as fraudulent. You can do this via Google’s safe browsing or direct through Meta where you can report the adverts you’re seeing as scam or fraudulent.
What to do if you have been scammed
Firstly, we’re so sorry. We hate that lots of you are receiving something with our branding and logo on, which we have not created.
Please do contact your bank, credit card company or PayPal if you’ve placed the transaction as you may be able to get your money back. Or contact the scam company and say you have received a fake product not as advertised and ask for a refund.
The other thing you can do is report the scam for us. We have a case open with the police via the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau. You can help us by reporting it to http://www.actionfraud.police.uk using the reference code NFRC241006958957.
P.S. We wanted to finish with a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us, reported any adverts or listings you’ve seen or messaged us with information. This has been so tough to deal with, but we are so grateful every single bit of help we have received. We will continue to fight to raise awareness, not just for us but for every small business affected by scammers and will keep you posted.
I have been scammed by one of these companies and the contents of each box is very disappointing. Oh how I wish I’d looked into this further as I’m a stationery obsessed person who loves pretty things. Lesson learned, and sadly I cannot remember where I ordered it from to pass on details.
Hi Samantha, so sorry you were scammed. They have been very clever with putting listings up and taking them down again so the listing may not even be there any more. It’s been very hard to tackle. Thank you for coming to find us and we hope you have a lovely Christmas.
Thank you for this information. When I received the Advent Boxes that i had ordered for some friends, I decided to cheat and peek into the different days’ boxes. Needless to say, I was at first shocked and then angry about what I had received. Boxes with virtually nothing on them – some had a card saying what should be in them. I immediately jumped online with the plan to lambast your company. Fortunately I saw this blog post first. Yes, I was ripped off and have two boxes of nothing useful and I’m out $75.00. I truly appreciate your blog. I’ve never encountered your company and I am highly impressed. Another lesson learned. Thank you.
Hi Kathleen, we are so sorry to hear that you were scammed and thank you for your comment. It’s been a sophisticated scam that has been unbelievably widespread. We are doing all we can to raise awareness and get the listings down. Hope you have a lovely Christmas x
This is the same thing that happened to me. I ordered two boxes. They have cards inside that list the items that should be in there. So disappointing for me and my daughter.
We bought one from Temu and made a Youtube video showing the items (or lack of) that are in each box. We did return it and got our money back thankfully. The listing is gone but the seller might have changed names to try and sell more of these. If you didn’t get to order one off THIS SITE, you got scammed like us! We are sending this video to Temu so hopefully they will take action and stop the counterfeits from being sold.
Thank you for this blog post. Hopefully more people get to read the post before they get scammed and possibly lose their money.
Merry Christmas everyone and DON’T GET SCAMMED!
Hello, I discovered your advent calendar on Amazon, I didn’t know it I found it for less than 30 euros, I thought it was a good deal, and when I opened my first box and I found out the name of the site and found out that I have a fake, I’m too on it. I think I would never have known the site as I am in France and your site is all in English. But in any case, looking at the site, I saw some very pretty things.
I was unaware of the scam until today when I opened the first box. Inside was a fountain pen and I googled how to fill it. I then found out my item is a fake. Needless to say the fountain pen is the bin! I’m going to contact my bank tomorrow
Hi Janet, so sorry you’ve been affected. Please do contact your bank or however you paid as we understand quite a lot of people have got their money back this way.
Oh no, I got a counterfeit calendar too. I was looking for a stationery calendar and this popped up in a Swedish shop. I thought that was very convenient and didn’t look into it further. When it turned out it was sent from China, I was annoyed. Now that I’ve opened two days, I was so disappointed I had to Google the brand and see if this was really correct content. Then I found this blog post. Wow this is so disappointing. I will report the shop for counterfeit items.
Hi Susanne, so sorry you’ve been affected. Yes, please do report the shop. We didn’t stock this anywhere other than our website.
Sadly I fell victim to this scam too, paid just over £31 altogether so it could have been a lot worse I suppose. Still annoyed that this sort of thing goes on. It was rosea.co.uk if this information is useful to your investigation!
I too was caught out by scammers. So disappointing. The most bizarre thing about it is that there are cards in the boxes stating what should be in the box and directing you to this website. I suppose at least you’re getting some advertising out of it, weird.
Hi Budgie, so sorry you’ve been affected by this. We believe what’s happened with the counterfeit version you have is that the scammers have copied a YouTube video of a customer unboxing hers. Those cards were the backing cards of actual stationery items, but they’ve just included the card with none of the stationery. They’ve tried to directly copy so they’ve left our logo on the box and our website address where it was on the packaging. Trust us, we would rather not have our name on such a poor copy! It’s awful that anyone could think we’ve made the counterfeit versions. Sorry you’ve been caught out by this and thank you for coming to find us. Martha
I received this as a gift this weekend and mine is clearly the fake version. Any suggestions about how to proceed?
Hi Robyn, I’m sorry to hear that. This scam has been unbelievably widespread and thousands of people have been affected. The counterfeit products are not ours and we are doing everything we can to raise awareness. I would alert whoever gave it to you and see if they can get a refund from where they ordered it from or their payment provider. We also have a case open with the police. They can report it to http://www.actionfraud.police.uk using the reference code NFRC241006958957. And if we can help further at all please email us. Best wishes, Martha
Sadly I too am a victim of this. I purchased through rosea.co.uk. I have tried to claim via Paypal, and the seller has offered a full refund – If I return it to China at my expense! I am trying to negotiate with Paypal now
I am so sorry that I purchased a counterfeit advent calendar from the TikTok shop, Remain True Heart seller. I have reported it to PayPal and will send the information to the fraud police immediately. My sincere apologies. I’m just sick about this one for the damage done to you from it, and two for the junk that arrived in the boxes. I will destroy the whole lot of it.
I just received a counterfeit one for Christmas. 🙁
Oh my!
I just researched the text from today’s content and ended up here on the website…. I think I’ve been scammed too. I am so sorry for you! You had a lot of work and so much love put into it…
The calendar has been ordered at the following Homepage: https://www.deutmart.de/products/24-tage-schreibwaren-adventskalender?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=Instagram_Reels&utm_campaign=120213558094130603&utm_term=120213558094310603&utm_content=120213558094220603&utm_id=120213558094130603&fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0BMAABpjd8nmcqUAXlm3Jygrt-J2Px7t0B9ti_LCYHcmStbuQRvw5_oipUGZrsvQ_aem__-psB74YpH9tsFxcU2zUrQ
Ironically, the website no longer exists.
Best regards,
Clara
I received this as a gift and was really confused by the quality of the items inside so far given Martha Brook’s reputation. It all makes sense now! Such a shame that scam companies would do this and make it, initially, so convincing. Thank you for posting this information!
Darn me too! We record all the advent calendars we buy for our show and I just realized today I have a fake! I am going to note that on our show tomorrow and call Amex to see if we can get our money back. Ours was shipped from Croatia!
I ordered 3 of these, one for myself (songwriter) friend (creative writer) and daughter (creative writer) I thought they would be the perfect pre Christmas gift we could all share as we love all things stationery! Unfortunately I was hit by the scam via Amazon (I think it popped up on Facebook as an advert first – so instead of clicking that link – didn’t want to get caught out – I trusted Amazon!
Amazon won’t do anything as they state I have to request a refund from the seller – who has now vanished !!
The contents in each envelope are worse than the cheapest Christmas crackers !! I feel very angry and embarrassed that I’ve gifted these to other people.
I am however, more annoyed for you, as a creative myself I know how much time is put into designing and producing such a product.
I tried to log into the action fraud website, but unfortunately it won’t let me log my complaint using your reference number.
I’m now going to contact my bank in the hope the payments can be recalled.
Wishing you all the best for the future x
My husband bought me one off Amazon.ca. We filed a complaint and Amazon will refund us if we do not get a full refund from the vendor. Amazon stated that it has a strict “no fraud/counterfeiting” policy and will note the vendor but likely they set up a store then shut down when caught. Lesson learned and we’ll likely reduce our Amazon shopping since we trusted they would catch frauds (of course the price should have given it away!). The items are pathetic and the booklets are not 1 to 24 but a variety of books numbered four, twenty, eight, etc. All even numbers so someone out there has an all “odd” set.
I was sent a counterfeit and didn’t realise until today. Gohomie are the company. So disappointed
They got me. I opened up my day five and day six, and they were just blank cards. :((
I am so sorry to have purchased a counterfeit! I feel so scammed! It actually came damaged so I reached out to who I purchased from and they gave me 60% of the price I paid back – I should have known something was amiss with the way it was packaged to ship. I saw the low quality in day 7 when the word “little” was spelled “liule”. I have reported my experience to the authorities as you posted. Hopefully I will be able to get the real thing next year!
I, too, was scammed and filed a case with PayPal. The name of the seller on Facebook was “flownwing” and the name on the PayPal receipt was “BlueRibbonRetail.” The so-called tracking link in the email I received simply took me to the Flownwing website with no tracking info at all. The product did arrive 3 weeks after I ordered it in 11/9/24, but the box and calendar were damaged, items from several folders in the box were missing, and the quality of the items was dreadful—these are items anyone could have purchased from a dollar store. And of course there was no personalized notebook. I am sorry this happened to you. This seller can no longer be found on Facebook, where I originally saw your video that was used. Not a big surprise.
I’ve been scammed too. So disappointing. However, looking for a silver lining, I’m going to reuse the box next year!
I purchased this from ebay the company are called makewonder – I had no idea about your company and certainly no idea it was a (very bad) copy. I’ve reported it using the crime reference you gave. Definitely a lesson learnt.
Think this is a counterfeit offer https://www.onbuy.com/gb/p/24-days-stationery-advent-calendar~p114790455/
I too was scammed, just realised today after opening 23 boxes and getting little bits of useless card in majority of them. I ordered through rosea.co.uk. Extremely disappointed but obviously not your fault. You live and learn. Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your team.
I received one from my son after sewing the advert on Instagram. One missing, 2 19’s, no 3 and no16. Contents very dull. Sorry you have had this happen to your company.
Hello. I am obsessed with stationery, so when I saw an ad on IG for a stationery advent calendar, I was sooo excited. I told my partner “Here is my advent calendar!” We ordered it, not knowing it was a counterfeit copy – in fact we only realised it was counterfeit when we were watching a random show on TV. “That looks like my advent calendar” I said excitedly. And then it dawned on us what had happened. My partner was upset, as was I – that our money didn’t go to you and your lovely staff. The contents were disappointing as everyone here has said. But I have promised myself that I will definitely purchase the advent calendar DIRECTLY from your website next year.
I am sorry that this has happened to you, but please do not be discouraged. I look forward to ordering lots of lovely stationery from your website in the coming year, And I am already looking forward to next year’s advent calendar.
Happy New Year to you and your staff.
bought two of these as Christmas presents. Very disapointed with contents. Unfortunately because I bought them early I have deleted where I bought them from.
Here in San Francisco, I received the counterfeit (unbeknownst) from my sister who also purchased one for herself. I thought the packaging lovely; she was immediately unhappy about the quality of the items (similar to the worst Christmas cracker toys). I did notice that I was missing Day Fourteen and I received two Day Eighteens. Agree there wasn’t much good in the daily offerings although the daily folders are beautiful, and, I thought, could be repurposed for an Advent Calendar next year – DIY style. So today I went on the Martha Brook website (brilliant – my first time here, can’t wait to shop!), to write to customer service in the off chance I could get a Day Eighteen folder (ha ha). On the website splash page I read a poor review. That led me to the product page (to read other reviews) and the pop up “Important Announcement” educated me that we had been scammed! My sister said she paid under U.S. $40 each. Shocking that there is a “dark web” for commercial enterprises. Now vendors have to worry about the marketing photos they post to sell their products? Very sad state of affairs. I will pass along the contents to my 9 year old Great Niece and I am sure she will be thrilled. All’s well that ends well? Trying to see a silver lining! If anyone has an extra Day Fourteen, reach out to me! 😊
I was scammed too, luckily I opened the box to peek at the contents and discovered poor quality printing and items , this was going to be my granddaughters advent gift so I was able to make other arrangements , I have registered a case on the action fraud website and am in discussions with my bank regarding a refund
I was also scammed. The box is beautiful, but the contents were very disappointing. I’ve joined your mailing list so hopefully I won’t make the same mistake again. So sorry this happened to such a nice company
