10 wonderful ways to get ready for Christmas
Nov 4It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The John Lewis advert is here and if that isn’t an official sign that we can start to get ready for Christmas, we don’t know what is?! Now we’re in November, the festivities feel closer than ever and to say we’re excited for the 25th December would be an understatement! With good things ahead and, we hope, a Christmas reunited, we’ve pulled together some of our top tips to help you and your home get ready for Christmas.
1. Declutter and clean
Tidy home, tidy mind, right?! Giving your home a pre-Christmas clean-up and make sure your home is clear of any clutter. Our thinking is “less clutter, more room for decorations!” When you’re having a tidy up to get ready for Christmas, think about any large decorations that could take up a fair bit of room and move furniture around to make way for them. It means you can pop the decoration or Christmas tree straight in that space, ready for your guests to admire.
2. Deck the halls
Are your stockings hung by the fireplace? Decorating the house, inside and out, is one of the best ways to get ready for Christmas, and a brilliant way to get you in the Christmas spirit! Why don’t you whack on some feel-good Christmas tunes, warm up some mince pies for any little helpers, and dig out the decorations for a fun day of decorating? From light up reindeer to gorgeous green garlands, let your creativity run wild this Christmas! Looking for some new Christmas decorations? Try West Elm or Etsy for some stylish paper Christmas trees or why not head over to discover our very own stationery-filled baubles?

3. Festive favourites
Rocking around the Christmas tree is made all the merrier with some Christmas music playing! Great as background music whilst you’re wrapping gifts or as entertainment for the evening, make a long playlist that’s packed with your festive favourites! By the end of the evening, you and your guests will be singing along after a glass or two of egg-nog or baileys! Short on time? Check out Spotify’s Christmas Hits playlist that has over 100 songs, ready to be put on shuffle.
4. Get baking
Fill the house with warmth and the smell of spices by baking some festive treats! One great way to get ready for Christmas is to prepare as much in advance as possible, so why not get ahead and make your Christmas pudding? Most of the cooking will need to be done closer to the time, but we believe there’s no such thing as too many mince pies! You can even bake up some Christmas goodies with a wonderful festive house kit from Honeywell Bakes that can decorate your Christmas cake or make your own potpourri. We love The Spruce Crafts technique, using plants from your garden, like lavender, roses and dried orange peel!

5. Oh, Christmas tree!
No Christmas would be complete without a Christmas tree! Think about height and width to make sure it can fit in your home and spend the afternoon hanging beautiful baubles, twinkly tinsel and… untangling those fairy lights (yep, we all know it’s coming!) Make a day of it and try your hand at some home-made decorations, we even tried a few ourselves!
6. Get crafty!
Get ready for Christmas with an afternoon of crafts! From making your own Christmas cards to creating your own Christmas wreath to hang with pride on your front door, having an arts and crafts afternoon with family and friends is a great way to spread some festive cheer. With festive snacks about to graze on, see what you can create in an afternoon that can used around the house to help get ready for Christmas. For more DIY Christmas decorations, head over to our recent blog where we re-used our advent calendar to make 24 decorations that can be used around the home.
Top tip: use kraft envelopes for your Christmas card envelopes, these are great to draw on and to get creative with!

7. It’s all jokes and games!
After the excitement of seeing family, opening presents and eating Christmas dinner, the evening is reserved for entertainment…and perhaps a cheese board. Nab that title of ‘host/hostess with the mostess’ and get in some games that are ready to be played before and after the festivities! With games like Pass The Pudding and Racing Reindeers in Christmas crackers, there’s nothing like a bit of festive competition to see you through the darker evenings! Let the games commence!
8. Christmas flowers
Another great way to get your home ready for Christmas is getting in some Christmas flowers. Add a pop of colour to any Christmas table with our favourite dried flower brand, Happy Blossoms. Their dried bouquets can be used year after year and makes a great feature on a mantlepiece too. Looking for an exciting and eclectic bunch? The Sherbet Macaroon Dried Baked Blossom Bunch is not to be missed, or try something a little more neutral with The Pop Goes the Fizz Dried Baby Baked Blossom Bunch.
Did you know: If your birthday falls in the same month as Christmas, holly is the birth flower for December?

9. Create a wrapping station
We’ll be the first to admit we’ve searched high and low for missing Sellotape that’s simply sitting underneath a spare piece of wrapping paper! When it comes round to wrapping presents, it can often feel frustrating, cluttered and messy! To make your life a little easier and to help get ready for Christmas, create a dedicated wrapping station that can be tidied away each day. Here you can leave your Sellotape in a dispenser, your Martha Brook wrapping paper together and those gift wrap accessories, like name tags and pens, in a neat, tidy and organised space.
10. Christmas by candlelight
Now your home looks like a winter wonderland, it’s time to make it smell like one! Another way to help get ready for Christmas is by way of candles, creating a soft, Christmassy ambience for your guests! With clove, cinnamon and zesty orange, the Winter candle by The White Company or the Orange and Cinnamon candle by Kindred Fires is a sure way to make your home smell as festive as it looks!
